ABSTRACT

This chapter examines three theories of justice and considers their implications for educational measurement. The theories of justice explored include utilitarianism, John Rawls’s theory of Justice as Fairness, and Charles Mills’s theory of Rectificatory Justice. Differential item functioning to analyze item bias, the development of context-neutral item context, and the use of mean effects to evaluate the efficacy of educational interventions are used to consider the implications each of these theories of justice have for educational measurement.
