ABSTRACT

This chapter examines several theories of racism and several concepts that are key to understanding the ways in which racism functions in society to produce advantage for the dominant “White race” through the oppression of all other racialized people. Key concepts examined include racialization, racial formation, racialism, racialist, and racist. Theories considered include biological racism, individual racism, cultural assimilation as racism, institutional racism, and structural racism. The chapter ends by presenting a model of systemic racism as it operates in the United States today.
