ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the American Freedom Rides impacted other struggles on a global scale. The development of the transatlantic networks of protest between the U.S.A. and Australia moves to center stage. It analyzes how the ideas and strategies were translated and “converted” from one place to the other in a non-mechanistic manner. Focusing on New South Wales, as the center of the student activities in Australia, allows a closer investigation of the questions of translation and transfer. By highlighting the role of media as a main tool of political action, the chapter turns to non-iconic images and reads their polyvalent and multiple layers in framing issues of space and mobility. Finally, it also shows the different facets of the role of the bus in the Australian Freedom Ride.
