ABSTRACT

The sound of enthusiastic cheering and applause fills the air in the Coliseo Don Bosco sports hall in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, a city of 1.5 million inhabitants in the Bolivian lowlands. Bolivia's male futsal 1 team is playing against Argentina for the tournament title. The match becomes increasingly exciting: both teams are equally strong, and they play in overtime. Although the stands are half-empty, the atmosphere is great: fans of all ages jump up and down, cheering to encourage their team. Given the location of the tournament, the majority supports Bolivia, waving flags, shouting “Viva Bolivia” and beating large, red barrel drums. When the ball ends in the corner next to the Argentinean goal, the Bolivian supporters scream out of disappointment. The Argentinean team sees a chance, runs towards the Bolivian goal – but the attack fails. Suddenly, everything happens very fast: a Bolivian player sidesteps an Argentinean, conquers the ball, skates forward, passes to his teammate who shoots and – Bolivia wins the gold medal!
