ABSTRACT
Nevertheless, not everybody with Japanese ancestors identifies as Nikkei or is readily accepted by other Nikkei as part of the comunidad japonesa. Therefore, Chapter 5 discusses the backside of the medal and shows a variety of possible identifications, leading to ambiguities and contradictions. Nikkei in Bolivia and elsewhere often differentiate themselves according to generation, language skills, regional origin and their ancestors’ time of arrival. One also observes a growing heterogeneity regarding individual attitudes towards the Nikkei community. Finally, I will examine descendants of partly non-Japanese origin, recent Japanese migrants, Nikkei from neighbouring countries and non-Nikkei acquaintances, their identities and their role in the comunidad.
