ABSTRACT

For most of the reader reading is the only way by which the people can keep abreast of the times, or find means to follow mental interests and personal tastes, though it is nowadays ably accompanied by broadcasting. The technique so well developed in many museums may be studied with much profit by all who are considering this method of publicity, as may that of many of the larger general stores. But the best publicity of all is the building up and maintaining of a high standard of public service to all who come to the library and make use of it. Publicity in libraries, then, is both special and general: special, as directed to the advertisement of different services and resources, mainly by printed poster, bulletin or leaflet; general, in that all the services of all the departments are public services which will be open to discussion, comment and criticism.
