Reached Manchester ½ past 4, dined & came on at ½ past 5, on the railroad to Birmingham where I arrived at 11 & stopt at the Corn Market Tavern. Reminded me much of Pickwick Papers. Landlady & servants talked exactly like M rs Bardell &c. 1 Slept in the coffee room in a bed made on a sofa. Came on Wed[nesda]y morning at ½ past 8, railroad to London, got here 2 P. M. ran all about town, to Rush, to the Legation & at last brought up here where I found Clarke.
