The chain of title is the unbroken record of ownership of the copyright and other legal rights to the film property. Frequently producers will need to find out copyright information concerning a particular work. Copyright searches are an art form all to themselves. Prior to production, we should have our entertainment attorney prepare a screenplay clearance report. Documentaries need to be particularly aware of libel and defamation claims. Registration is the process of filing our copyright information with the government and gives us far greater protections over our copyright than if we don't register it. The Copyright Office has made registration easier than ever by moving it online.
