ABSTRACT

During pre-production, we will be hiring our cast and crew. Federal and state employment and labor laws govern discrimination, wages, workplace safety, child labor, immigration compliance, and workers’ compensation/disability/unemployment insurance. Each state has its own set of laws and requirements, which can differ quite radically from other states and even within a state. On the federal level, the US government requires that employers comply with laws regarding wages, health and safety, family leave, and other key aspects of the employer/employee relationship. In New York, as in California, the presumption is that a worker is an employee, but this presumption is rebuttable. Discrimination in the workplace is strictly prohibited.
