ABSTRACT

The choice of performers is critical to a narrative film's success. The majority of the time, the lead performers are the single most important elements in making our film. An actor's creative contributions begin before they are even cast. Watching performers audition can expose the weaknesses in a role and may underscore the need for a script rewrite. Once a production company is a SAG-AFTRA signatory, the SAG-AFTRA Basic Agreement, like other union agreements, will overrule any contrary provisions in the contract between the production company and an actor. SAG-AFTRA has made an effort to accommodate filmmakers of all budgetary levels. Residuals are additional payments required to be paid to union performers when the film is licensed in ancillary markets such as broadcast television, cable, home video, and SVOD but not theatrical distribution.
