ABSTRACT

In the broadest possible sense, distribution is the process of getting our film into the hands of exhibitors, who, in turn, will show the film to viewers. Making money from distribution, exhibition, and merchandising our film is called “exploiting our film.” The most important change—indeed, an actual paradigm shift—has occurred as a result of widespread accessibility to digital filmmaking tools coupled with Internet-based distribution and exhibition portals like YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, bolstered by the seemingly endless array of social media apps to drive marketing and promotion. Many distributors prefer dealing with producer's reps because of their familiarity with the current film market. Sales agent—another link in the chain connecting film producers with distributors. Sales agents are typically extremely versatile in separating out rights and offering them in different territories.
