ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the relationship between the European Union (EU) and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) over time, outlining its historical context and analysing the rationale behind recent changes in EU foreign policy towards ASEAN. It provides an overview of the most important policy instruments underlying EU–ASEAN interregional relations. It also identifies contextual factors, ranging from geopolitical and economic factors in Europe and East Asia to newly emerging global security issues, which have played a crucial role in reshaping EU–ASEAN dialogue and cooperation.
