ABSTRACT

Celebrities can find themselves in strange junctures. In 1934 Jelly was asked to appear at the Bath Pump Room in a lively sort of evening coyly called ‘Happy Night’; during which she performed the Beethoven Violin Concerto with the Pump Room Orchestra between what is called ‘Light Classical’ numbers. She quite enjoyed this. Celebrity means also meeting other celebrities; and this she greatly enjoyed. After a concert in Oxford Town Hall she went to an Oxford party. It was a lovely June evening, with Jupiter and Mars very close together in a clear sky. She played on the lawn. Einstein was at the party. Jelly stayed often with the Denekes. In 1928 she had had another recital in the Town Hall, and was horrified to find that the same evening Albert Schweitzer was holding a meeting elsewhere in the city for his African mission.
