ABSTRACT

One day in Budapest Adila, who had graduated from Grunfeld’s class into Hubay’s, was taken by her late professor to Zimmer’s violin shop to buy a new bow. Jelly went with them. It was Jelly’s eighth birthday, and she was holding a bag of sweets. She was to go to the Academy herself in the autumn to study the piano. At the end of that time she had to pass an entrance examination, an ordeal rather severe, since all the eminent musicians who were professors at the Academy heard all the candidates. Little Jelly learned as quickly as she had begun. In her second year she broke a leg while skating. The only result was a double remove next term. The year following, the Joachim Quartet was in Budapest on its way to an engagement in Vienna. Adila attended all her uncle’s recitals, and sat on the platform with a spare violin.
