ABSTRACT

The most touching gift of all came from Aberfan, where children’s toys and clothes were sent by parents who had tragically nobody any more to play with or wear them. But children’s clothes came also from the twin city, where a lady of over eighty freed her wrists from arthritis enough to knit them herself. City responded to city from all over the world, institution to institution, individual to individual. The city had been divided into zones, allotted to each of the group members, and these became leaders each of a squad which examined every case personally and made recommendations for or against payment by what they found. The brave new christmas lighting of shopping streets which the city had instituted with competitions and prizes, there was no electric current for.
