ABSTRACT
It is glib and perilous to generalise about groups of people as types of people: dour Scots, jolly Jack Tars, correct Germans, decadent peons. One gets mawkish from ignorance or liverish from dislike or contempt. But one who lives in two countries can draw some distinctions in a general way. These derive from locality.
