ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the sustainability in the coffee and tea industries. The tea study was focused in Sri Lanka and took me to the world tea expo in Las Vegas, Nevada, as well as across various tea-drinking communities in India, Nepal, Myanmar, and China. Mirroring the coffee study, the main goal was to understand farmer and supply chain perspectives on how the tea industry has transformed over time and the implications of current sustainability practices on the future of their livelihoods. In particular, the tea research focused on issues of environmental sustainability. The content narrates how the forces of colonization, development, globalized markets, and the rise of sustainable business have created new approaches to sustainability and models that have scalable value to create impact.
