ABSTRACT

This chapter defines and describes the dimensions of social sustainability more broadly and how they have been operationalized in the tea and coffee industries. A primary focus of this chapter presents the data from research with the coffee and tea farmers on their perspectives. Key insights from the farmers point to the essential role of institutions and certification programs in improving social sustainability at the individual and collective levels. The goal of this chapter is to better understand how social sustainability is integrated into the coffee and tea industries and to provide specific examples of how this is operationalized from the farmers' experiences.
