ABSTRACT

In a growing number of towns so great an emphasis is placed upon the collection that it is given a separate apartment. In some places the local collection room is en suite with the reference library, and is always under the supervision of its staff; and in a small town this is possibly the most economical way. The general question of the shelving and housing of the material must therefore be considered. When all methods are considered, there is much to be said for the vertical file for everything in the collection except books and the larger material. Experience shows that a folder for each item is the best method in the end, except for a collection of leaflets or cuttings on one topic, and even these should not be allowed to bulk a folder too much. Tracing from maps or prints should again be carefully supervised.
