ABSTRACT
In this chapter the writer introduces Pretoria Central Prison where much of the book is set. This is the prison where the Women in Solitary were detained in solitary confinement for more than a year. It was also the site of hangings during the apartheid era in South Africa. The writer describes the prison as seen on a visit which heralded the death anniversary of another freedom fighter, Solomon Mahlangu.
