ABSTRACT

In this chapter the writer introduces Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, one of the central figures of the anti-apartheid movement and central to the trial in the book, as it was meant to remove her and her comrades from South African society. Being a figurehead for the banned African National Congress (ANC), Winnie Mandela would have been target number one for the apartheid government after the Rivonia triallists were imprisoned. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, also known as Winnie Mandela, was born on 26 September 1936 and is well known as a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician, and the second wife of Nelson Mandela. She served as a member of parliament from 1994 to 2003, and from 2009 until her death, and was a deputy minister of arts and culture from 1994 to 1996.
