ABSTRACT
In the full form of dictionary catalogue not only must the contents be separately catalogued each under its respective author and subject, but also the whole contents should be set out under the Editor’s name as main-entry. The short dictionary catalogue can omit the list of the contents under the editor’s name (main-entry) but cannot ignore any of the items for individual treatment. Some cataloguers might consider that simple entries under the editor and under the general subject of “Knowledge’ ‘ are sufficient to meet the case, but such entries alone are inadequate in view of the importance of the authors and subjects of the book. Volumes of miscellaneous essays need more careful consideration for this analysis, especially if essays are on different and definite subjects. It is essential that important essays or reviews, such as those of Macaulay, should be catalogued under their subjects, as they might be only contribution upon a particular subject which a library can offer.
