ABSTRACT

This chapter summarizes the key arguments made throughout this book. Notably, this chapter emphasizes that institutionalizing the fully engaged dad concept of fatherhood as a cultural norm is vital in working toward greater gender equality in the United States. By expecting fathers to be equally involved in all aspects of domestic life – and holding fathers accountable to this standard – gendered disparities in domestic labor should be reduced and opportunities in paid work should also become more equal for mothers and fathers. This chapter also discusses some strategies that may help to establish the fully engaged dad concept as a cultural norm including implementing a national paid leave policy and increasing access to, and support of, other family-supportive policies within workplaces. Practical advice is also offered, providing some ways in which fathers can become more involved parents and partners and work toward being a more fully engaged dad.
