ABSTRACT
It is no secret that conservative responses to gender change have been more pronounced in the Middle East in the past century than in some other regions. But patterns varied, as this chapter discusses in dealing particularly with conflicting changes in Turkey and Iran. More recent developments such as terrorism and the Arab Spring contributed additional, and again often conflicting, components.
