ABSTRACT
Imperialism and Christian missionary activity (though not always coordinated) strongly influenced gender relations in these two new colonial domains in the 19th century, though as usual with complicated results. Concerns about sexuality and traditional labor roles encouraged more domestic functions for women. But there were also new efforts to promote schooling for girls. As in India, gender relations became an important challenge for rising nationalist movements in the 20th century.
