ABSTRACT

To help create independent and persistent learners, teachers can teach students how to learn. In cooperative groups, students can also learn to teach each other. Learning to teach and be a learner at the same time can be a powerful advantage to students, both for their understanding of the content as well as for the skill itself. Using inductive teaching strategy and stimulating content (What causes earthquakes? Is this “weird fact” true? What is happening in this painting? What are some examples of conflict resolution in literature? Let’s create a rule for determining the area of a triangle), students respond well to each other, particularly after think time and in pairs. Knowledge of the paths to learning and of strategies for teaching are two sides of the same coin—the currency for a lifetime of inquiry. Such knowledge frees students from overdependence and enriches the lives of everyone around them. As a consequence, the teacher is far less likely to function as high priest of knowledge and warden of behavior.
