ABSTRACT

The basis of all classroom success is the ability to read. This ability is gained by reading. Students have to have an appetite for reading. Much of this appetite depends on their choice of books. Along with reading to the class every day, the teacher can select books for individuals according to their interests. This process can be facilitated by having a database showing all the books that students can remember having read and the books they are currently reading. Both teacher and students can access this list to get ideas of what to read, connected to the names of classmates they can ask about them. After silent reading each day, students can take a couple of minutes to “sell” their books to partners. The teacher sets up the format for the selling so that not too much is revealed. Students can choose passages from their books to have the teacher read aloud dramatically to the class. This activity provides writing models for the class as well as interesting them in the books.
