ABSTRACT

In one classroom in a school I’ve observed, students arrive every day expecting to hear the next episode of an ongoing fable told and acted out by their teachers. The two teachers spin a tall tale yarn every day, and the students live vicariously through the characters in the stories. They learn math, original writing, and history in relation to the stories. Teachers and students sometimes dress like the characters and engage other staff in the school in the adventures. Students generate episodes and have their own tales to tell. This is one example of a story-centered classroom—a plot that motivates and integrates.
