With the students, create or find proverbs, sayings, principles, aphorisms, maxims, quotes, and hypotheses. Fill the walls with these statements and those of the students. The walls of the Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials have power because their inscribed sentiments are some of the buttresses of civilization. Put up the words that can hold a classroom, and someday maybe a world, together:

Learn to read; read to learn. Might is not always right. Friendship is the glue. Cooperation is the ally of competition. Life is a journey, not a race. There is beauty in mathematics. Knowledge is power. There are some things in life you don’t realize.
