ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the importance of teachers having a personal literacy philosophy, concerning important topics such as learning theories, reading models and current research that supports the models, state standards, and national mandates. Disciplinary literacy, digital literacies, critical literacies, and culturally responsive teaching are discussed in greater detail. The science of reading, a term that has been discussed among educators, researchers, and political groups, is explained using literacy research from the past 40 years.
