ABSTRACT

Phonics and spelling are combined in this chapter because students apply phonics knowledge when they write. This chapter’s “Phonics at a Glance” gives definitions for many of the terms associated with phonics. The chapter then explains two common theories regarding spelling instruction. English spelling’s developmental stages and the many common spelling patterns (e.g., CVC, CVVC, CVCe, CV) are discussed. The Common Core State Standards Foundational Skills that highlight phonics and spelling are included for easy reference. Formal and informal phonics and spelling assessments are discussed. In the “Intervention” section, activities emphasizing initial consonant sounds, onset and rime, rhyme, word patterns, and sounds within words are explained. The “Technology” section lists apps and websites that focus on phonics and spelling. The chapter begins and ends with two different classroom scenarios with guiding and reflective questions that can be used for classroom discussions.
