ABSTRACT
This chapter starts with autobiographical anecdote about encountering the city’s monuments, followed by a brief history of some alternatives to the traditional martial monument. It focuses on certain works of the artist Hew Locke, which the writer describes as ‘hypotheses’, and this develops into a discussion of ‘dress’ as a form of temporary adornment that changes values and meanings of otherwise fixed objects.
