ABSTRACT
This chapter starts by describing A Tour of the Monuments of Passaic, New Jersey, a work by the artist Robert Smithson, and situating it in relationship to art history and contemporary culture. The artist’s subjective nomination of monuments is compared with both Marcel Duchamp and photography. The chapter concludes by contextualising the work in relation to geological time, entropy, the Anthropocene, and Romanticism.
