ABSTRACT

For many, that luxury will not exist and when the people as designers are asked to consider compact spaces, they have to use all their skills to create something new which is clever, aesthetically pleasing and practical, or to improve what is there for the benefit of clients. There are differences between designing a spacious home and fitting multifarious functions into a smaller one. Subtle alterations can make all the difference, and a clever designer will learn how to recognise the potential of an existing property or ensure that a new build has a layout which will look wonderful but still be practical. The survey of a building will reveal any problems such as soil stacks, chimney flues and structural walls which could prevent that bright idea from becoming a reality. The larger property will have more empty air, whereas the smaller one will be constricted, and the solutions may be more complex than the client will at first appreciate.
