ABSTRACT

Manipulating the available space, trying to create more if possible, considering the overall look and then developing the different elements will take time and effort – inevitably more than originally expected. The client might want an integrated USB socket and other media or IT sockets somewhere in the cooking space. It is vital that there is enough light over any work surface, so if the cooking space includes a peninsula or island the designer needs to ensure that the cook can do their preparation and cooking without being caught in their own shadow. The architect reworked the space so that the dining and social area would be closest to the window, while the cooking space would be next to the kitchen door and defined by a bespoke room divider separating the two areas. By using ready-made oak kitchen units, the architect was able to save money within the budget, which could be used for the bespoke display shelves and cupboards.
