ABSTRACT

Detoxification is a natural process of biotransformation of waste from the body. Waste products collect in response to normal metabolic functions, low-quality foods, drug and alcohol abuse, and exposure to environmental toxins. The primary principle of detoxification is to reduce exposure and actively eliminate waste. Detoxification helps to reduce pain and inflammation caused by toxins and enhances organ function. Strategies include foods like cruciferous vegetables, herbs, sweats, skin brushing, and coffee enemas. These methods enhance the liver’s three phases of detoxification and enable the elimination of waste from the colon. Incorporating detoxification strategies congruent with the individual’s beliefs and capacities to carry them out is a scientifically demonstrated approach to improving well-being. Each client will benefit from developing a step-by-step plan tailored to their self-care needs at each stage of recovery. Detoxification aids in the elimination of addictive substances like tobacco from the body and aids in tapering off psychotropic medications.
