ABSTRACT

Having introduced the range of text-on-screen use in Chapter 1, I will provide an overview of various approaches in audiovisual translation (AVT) and introduce relevance theory (Sperber and Wilson 1986/1995) as the theoretical foundation of this study. While AVT has predominantly applied multimodal analysis and cognition-based empirical methods, relevance theory has the potential to complement these perspectives. However, it has faced criticisms within the AVT field and remains somewhat underexplored. I will explore relevance theory’s fundamental principles and concepts, its applications in translation studies, criticisms within the AVT domain, and responses to these critiques, highlighting its potential to enhance existing AVT methodologies.
