ABSTRACT

In this book, my aim was to explore the relevance-based explanation of text-on-screen use and its impact on viewers’ interpretation process. To conclude, in this final chapter, I provide a summary of each preceding chapter, explaining the role of text-on-screen and the repercussions of its use. I illustrate how relevance-theoretic pragmatics offers a comprehensive theoretical framework that allows us to understand how our cognitive processes engage with the text on the screen, leading to the intended interpretations and revealing the societal consequences of this interaction.

This chapter concludes by exploring new research avenues that emerged during our discussions in this book. These avenues will undoubtedly influence the future of relevance theory. By concentrating on unconventional audiovisual practices, this book also pioneers a new area of research within relevance theory. It demonstrates how relevance theory can contribute to the examination of socially oriented issues, expanding its scope beyond topics traditionally covered in relevance theory literature. The chapter wraps up by restating the potential of relevance theory to provide a well-grounded pragmatic analysis of both emerging and established media practices.
