ABSTRACT

This chapter explores cannabis and law, society, and social control. Theoretical starting points include demonology, labeling, and conflict theories. Key concepts explored in this chapter include the role of stigma, normalization, and medicalization. Research demonstrates that while stigma has been reduced, it persists in fascinating and sometimes contradictory ways. One development is the medicalization of cannabis and the shift from carceral responses to coercive care through treatment. Another is how people who use cannabis experience shame and judgment, even where cannabis has been legalized.
