ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we consider the future of cannabis criminology. We summarize some key findings from this book, including the power of stigma, persistent inequalities associated with policing cannabis, and the invisibility of coercive care and control within diversion programs. Some of these problems can be traced to the success of the New Prohibitionists and the failure of public criminology. Finally, we consider a research program based on the five thematic areas that have organized this book. Beyond research, we present new ways to engage prohibitionist thinking by challenging myths, embracing social media, and developing a duty of care to guide future cannabis researchers and to explicitly involve people who use cannabis.
