ABSTRACT

A student portfolio is a collection of materials that represents what a student learned. It may be something as simple as a folder containing the student’s best work, along with the student’s evaluation of this work. The assessment of a portfolio comes more from the student commentary than it does from the pieces she selected as part of the portfolio. Calorie tracking has become general practice among those trying to live a healthy lifestyle. Tracking calories and other nutritional aspects is a chance to use some math skills. A picture graph uses visuals or symbols to represent numbers. Bar graphs are a good display when making comparisons between two sets of data. As students develop their own graphs for their portfolios, they will need to create and solve several one- and two-step “how many more” and “how many fewer” questions, using information presented in their bar graph.
