ABSTRACT

Debates and speeches are a higher level of thinking because they don’t just convey information but employ tactics to convince someone that one student’s opinions or viewpoints are more valuable than another’s. It is a process more complicated than the usual presentation because it looks at “ethos, the credibility of the speaker; logos, the logical proof and reasoning presented in the words of the speech; and pathos, the use of emotional appeals to influence the audience”. Although not as interactive as a debate, the speech still requires the student to tap into higher levels of thinking and make a sound argument. The presentation should be appropriate for the age of the class and also should be engaging.
