ABSTRACT

Engaging today’s learners is by no means an easy task. If they are not engaged immediately, it is easy for them to check out and become distracted or even a behavior problem. In short, an experience involves learning by doing. Passive learning is not meaningful and simply will not work for this generation of learners. Active learning that requires them to do something, act on something, or design and create something takes the learning to the next level and makes it real. When the learning is an experience, we have created a reason for students to invest. The last part of designing a meaningful learning experience is finding ways to empower. During a student-led conference, students might share how they feel about school, what they have learned, what their goals are, and what they plan to do to reach those goals.
