ABSTRACT

All educators need to be aware of ways of developing program services and supports within the school and the school district so that students might accelerate across grade levels and participate in extended learning opportunities. Within-class strategies may include curriculum compacting, where after pretesting, students are allowed to do alternative activities; forming small homogeneous groups; engaging in individual research projects; and using contracts or menus. To implement any of these strategies, the teacher within a classroom setting needs to establish an instructional management system so that students can work independently or in small groups. Other ways of organizing materials to be used more independently are to use symbols for nonreaders, place folders in a file box and label them according to domain and standard, put manipulatives in see-through plastic boxes, or organize games in the folders, portfolios, or small boxes.
