ABSTRACT

Each stage of this "grab bag" of problems extends your students' understanding of rates and proportions in some new way. In the first problem, students literally grab blocks from a bag one handful at a time and estimate the total number of blocks. Their challenge is to combine a large amount of data in a situation involving proportions. In Stage 2, students explore reciprocal rates, and they look at what happens when addition and subtraction are thrown into the mix. Finally, in Stage 3, they investigate average rates.
