ABSTRACT

This chapter provides specific support for building the mathematical practices into teachers’ instruction: teaching and motivation strategies, ideas for developing mathematical communication skills, suggestions for managing classroom conversation, and examples of implementing the explorations in different settings. The practice standards are deeply embedded in the explorations. Most of these standards are present in some form in every activity. The explorations themselves contain lists of observations and questions to support probing conversation, samples of multiple thinking strategies, and some actual examples of classroom discussions. Some talented students, especially those who have had many opportunities to learn through problem solving, may accelerate or even change the sequence of some learning trajectories.
