ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author shares some problems that have helped his students deepen their insights and clarify any misconceptions. He usually blends these problems with exercises from a textbook so that students firm up new skills and understandings as they work. Talented math students tend to make sense of percentages without much trouble, though they may struggle with challenging problems when they know only one way to think about them. Algebra students who understand connections between percentages and proportional relationships may also solve some of the percentage problems by writing and solving algebraic proportions. Students who have not have learned quick procedures for percentage calculations will develop strategies based on their personal understanding.
