ABSTRACT

This chapter includes activities, assignments, and various reproducible materials intended to aid students through the initial process of reading The Scarlet Letter. Moreover, there are several creative ways in which classroom teachers might publicize or share students' vocabulary analysis work, possibly helping an entire class to benefit from the scholarship of its individual members. The AP English Literature and Composition Exam's multiple-choice section requires students to read short passages of prose and poetry in order to answer questions that require precise comprehension and insightful analysis of the pieces' literary devices, purposes, tonal effects, themes, and formal structures. In today's technologically united Western world, it is an unfortunate fact of education that completing assigned reading for homework has become more avoidable than ever for savvy, intelligent students. If all preparatory work is completed outside of class, then the presentations alone should occur over one approximately one-hour class period.
