ABSTRACT

To many classroom teachers, the phrase "Socratic seminar" and the Greek word paideia are effectively synonymous. A logical and clearly articulated mechanism for evaluating students' participatory dialogue is necessary, and it proves especially beneficial to students who are exposed to it and its criteria before actual graded conversation occurs. Socratic seminar discussions are cooperative, enlisting classrooms of students to investigate and solve literary puzzles as a group, but debates between groups of students pitted against each other, on opposite sides of a subjective issue, are competitive. This chapter contained mechanisms and methods for augmenting students' understanding of The Scarlet Letter by spurring discussion. Students firstly needs to familiarize themselves with adaptations of The Scarlet Letter, both directly and indirectly. Thus, they should choose from the following chart one item from the column on the left and one item from the column on the right.
