ABSTRACT

This chapter offers several different approaches to help motivate people's child to read the book, do the exercises, and face her fears. Always start with empathizing, showing that people understand how hard it is for her and how scary it feels to face the anxiety. Some children with anxiety will also have oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and throw tantrums, be aggressive, and exhibit defiance when their parents ask them to cooperate; when it is true oppositional defiant behavior, this defiance will show up regularly when the child is not anxious or not in anxiety-provoking situations. Reward/sticker charts can be used for behaviors that fall outside the scope of anxiety In general, reinforcement is used to increase the occurrence of a behavior and the behavior people are targeting is participation in this program. Positive reinforcement describes the act of rewarding a child with something desirable once he has done a good job.
